Creativity vs Innovation
In the realm of problem solving there are two concepts that take the lead and they are creativity and innovation. They may seem closely related but in reality, they are not. Each one plays a different role in the process of ideation and development.
A deeper understanding into these two concepts and the roles they play can help us harness their power to transform and shape the world around us.
So, what really is “Creativity” then.
Some may say it is being able to bring concepts to life, think up solutions, get ideas using your imagination or as Google defines it, the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality but is that really it?.
For me, I believe creativity is being able to generate ideas, concept and solutions through thinking. Not regular conventional thinking though, I’m talking about seeing things from a different perspective or as people like to call it “ thinking outside the box”.
A common misconception is that creativity cannot be cultivated and that only a few lucky people have the ability to be creative but it seems to be quite the opposite because to me an individual can wake up in the morning and randomly doodle down something and just like that he’s being creative. I believe creativity can be developed and nurtured, to me everyone can be creative.
According to classical psychology research, it is said that there are four types of creativity which people experience but I only three out of them and they are:
Deliberate and Cognitive: This is the creativity of planning and expertise. In simple terms, it’s just creativity with a purpose.
Deliberate and Emotional: This is that kind of creativity where logic meets emotions.
Spontaneous and Cognitive: This creativity relies on knowledge and inspiration for a “Eureka” moment. It’s called the creativity of preparation and timing.
Spontaneous and Emotional: This creativity happens when we least expect it, they call it the creativity of the unconscious.
So unto the next, what is Innovation and how does it relate with creativity? .
Innovation according to Google can be defined as the process of making an idea or invention into something that creates value. Let’s just say it’s the practical application of your creative ideas turning them into something of value. I’ll say that pretty much explains it but then the real question is what distinguishes the two and what makes them same? .
So what distinguishes them?
Well its simple, creativity is a thought process that leads to crazy, unique ideas. It’s all about cognitive exercise and innovation on the other hand is more about execution, developing and building. The latter often requires a more technical approach, combining creativity with technical expertise, strategic thinking and let’s not forget marketing and sales because what’s an idea if you can’t sell it though LOL. Innovation encompasses everything from ideation to implementation.
So what makes them the same?
Well while creativity and innovation seem distinct, they are not mutually exclusive. You see, while creativity provides the fuel for innovation by being the generator for the ideas and all, innovation on the other hand gives us a way to implement to those ideas. Innovation helps us channel that creativity turning them to real-world solutions.
While these two concepts possess immense potential, there are some limiting factors to the full harnessing of their powers. Imagine an environment where you can’t freely express yourself and maximize your brain power, do you think you can actively think of solutions in that environment? I’m guessing your answer would be NO. This is exactly what happens in various places like offices, schools etc. Some of these situations can be caused by the fear of failure and risk aversion and they can impede the exploration of new ideas and hinder innovative endeavors and to overcome these we have to embrace the uncertainty and iterative nature of the creative process, Yes it can’t always be right but it can be modified to do so. I think to help foster creativity and innovation, offices, schools and work places should create an open and inclusive environment for individuals, provide them with necessary resources and the most important never criticize their ideas as it can lead to creative block (when an individual is no longer able to be creative. Can be caused by so many factors) as I call it.
In conclusion, creativity and innovation are two sides of the same coin. Creativity is the wellspring of imaginative ideas, while innovation applies those ideas and turns them into practical solutions. It is important to note that the both of them are important for tackling complex problems and challenges in any environment. By nurturing creativity and embracing innovation, individuals and organizations can unlock their full potential and make a lasting impact on the world around them.
By the way, I forgot to tell you the types of creativity I’ve experienced and I know you were dying to know which it was. Well it was 1,3 and 4.
Don’t forget to embrace and nurture your creative side. Don’t be scared to explore your capabilities.
